Goosed

2002

goosed - Daniel Heyman
gouache on paper; 26 inches x 41 inches

This painting was painted after a visit to Little Lake Lodge in Aspen, CO. At that home, I was inspired by all the furnishings, in particular the woven curtains, which became the focus of this image. The swan’s head dangling between a man’s legs outside the curtains refers to ‘Swan Upping at Cookham’ by Sir Stanley Spencer, 1915–19. Here, the ridiculous “counting of the swans” is translated to a lake in Aspen, Colorado, a land where wealth is counted in views and curtains, not birds.. The “putti” comes from the cave of our past carrying a goose by the neck.
